Mr. Werness has been serving clients as a full-time business appraisal specialist since 1992. He has completed hundreds of professional appraisal assignments, including opinions and reports for purposes such as estate and gift taxation, shareholder dispute litigation, employee stock ownership plan implementations and annual updates, marital dissolution proceedings, income taxation (charitable gifts), merger, sale and acquisition planning. He has provided expert witness testimony in Minnesota District Court.

He has successfully completed all certification coursework and examinations required by the ASA for certification as a senior business appraiser, is a member of the Institute of Business Appraisers, and has attended dozens of business appraisal seminars and conferences through the years sponsored by the ASA, IBA, National ESOP Association, National Center for Employee Ownership, and various legal and accounting groups.

Mr. Werness served two years as President of the North Central Chapter of the Institute of Business Appraisers, and is a former chapter officer for the Twin Cities Chapter of the American Society of Appraisers. He has given several presentations to industry and professional groups on issues dealing with business valuation, and served as a guest lecturer for the University of St. Thomas' Center for Entrepreneurship.

Mr. Werness holds a BS degree in Journalism from the University of Colorado at Boulder, 1977 and a Juris Doctor degree from William Mitchell College of Law, St. Paul, Minnesota, 1982. Prior to joining Hawthorne Company in 1992, he spent 15 years serving in a variety of agency and corporate financial communications positions representing both private and publicly-traded business organizations.
